What’s New: Today, Intel introduced the Intel® RealSense™ Depth Camera D457, a high precision, longer range stereo camera built to expand functionality of Intel’s industry-leading Intel® RealSense™ Depth Camera D455 through the addition of a Gigabit Multimedia Serial Link™ (GMSL)/FAKRA interface.  The Intel RealSense Depth Camera D457 is designed to address connectivity challenges for autonomous mobile robots.

“The D457 depth camera adds a GMSL serializer and FAKRA connector to the Intel RealSense camera product line. The GMSL/FAKRA interface, connector and longer cable length interface are used extensively in the automotive industry and are perfect for use with Autonomous Mobile Robots.”

–Joel Hagberg, head of products and marketing for Intel RealSense Technology

How It’s Different: The addition of a GMSL FAKRA Interface to the Intel® RealSense™ stereo product portfolio enables customers to take advantage of the longer 15-meter cable length and proven secure automotive style locking connectors. The D457 leverages the D450 module design, which extends the distance between the depth sensors to 95 millimeters and improves the depth Z error to less than 2% at 4 meters. The wider baseline provides better accuracy at the same range of the D415/D435/D435i. To improve the correspondence between the depth and RGB images, the global shutter sensors have matching fields of view of 86 degrees.  The D457 has an IP65-rated enclosure which is dust tight and protected from projected water.

How It Works: The D457 depth camera adds a GMSL serializer and FAKRA connector to the Intel RealSense camera product line.  GMSL/FAKRA is lower power, lower ESD/EMI noise and lower latency, and with a longer cable length interface compared to USB. The GMSL interface also offers higher bandwidth compared to Ethernet. It requires a compatible host platform with a GMSL de-serializer and FAKRA connector. The USB connector is used for production line and debug only.

Why It Matters: The GMSL serializer extends cable length support up to 15 meters and enables use of the secure FAKRA connector, which is preferred for robotic applications. The D457 is supported with a separate kernel driver package for the GMSL serializer. It is tested and verified on leading platforms with GMSL de-serializer and FAKRA connector support.

The D457 is part of the Intel® RealSense™ D400 Series of cameras, a lineup that takes the latest depth-sensing hardware and software from Intel and puts them into easy-to-integrate packaged products. The camera is assembled at Intel’s production line with a simple out-of-the-box integration into downstream products.

As with all cameras in the D400 series, the D457 is supported by the Intel® RealSense™ software development kit (SDK) making it easy for existing customers to use.

When You Can Get It: The Intel RealSense Depth Camera D457 is expected to be available in fourth quarter of this year and will be priced at $499. For more details and ordering, visit the Intel RealSense web page.
